Since the beginnings of the U.S., we have experienced a growing language barrier in courts and communities associated with the influx of immigrants, the expansion of linguistically diverse communities, and the development of legal processes for those wanting to become a part of our great melting pot. In response to this growth, we are excited to announce that DE LA MORA Institute is now exploring ways to help break down this language barrier by offering our 52.5-hour Immigration and Community Interpreter course for the first time in our school’s history.

Along with an introduction to the modes and skills used in community interpreting, instructor Meenu Batra will also cover immigration-specific terminology, types of court cases, and ethical issues. This course is open to students of all languages and experience levels who wish to make a difference in their communities.

Immigration: In the first portion of this course will extensively cover interpretation in most immigration-related settings, from apprehension and initial interviews to final hearings. Topics covered in this course will include live and remote interpreting, types of immigration calendars and hearings, the ethical role of the interpreter, and how to handle difficult situations. This course will cover all modes of interpretation used in immigration courts and will give students the chance to learn, practice, and improve their sight translation, consecutive, and simultaneous interpretation skills. Students will be provided with immigration-related vocabulary, terminology and commonly used acronyms as well.

Community: The second portion of this course will cover community interpreting and the critical skills and knowledge that an interpreter needs in order to launch or develop a strong community interpreting practice. Interpreters will also explore real life decision-making scenarios taken from the community interpreting context that regularly challenge the ethical boundaries community interpreters must maintain. Finally, interpreters will receive guidance in charting a path for professional growth, and will explore avenues for building their skills and expanding their interpreting practice.

Content will be presented in a LIVE online, hands-on format, allowing participants to practice their interpreting skills, assess their progress, and discuss ethically challenging situations common to the field. Participants must pass a final exam in order to receive a Certificate of Completion. All study materials – including interpreting exercises, lesson content, resources, and references – are included in this course at no additional cost.
